Talk on phianthropy in the East End, 1800-1945
For our May main meeting we’ll be joined by Tim Potter who’ll give us a talk all about philanthropy in the East End, covering 1880-1945.
The talk will focus on the East End of London and how generations of East Enders worked to raise the population from the poverty that surrounded them.
It's a great story of remarkable people: Barnardo, the Elephant Man, the Salvation Army, Clement Attlee, the match girls will all make an appearance.
Mainly it's about self-help; ordinary people working together to help each other - a story fit for our times. But it's also an introduction to a wonderful walk through Stepney and Mile End.

Talk by Chris Duffin - ex-governor of Strangeways
For our March meeting we’re excited to welcome Chris Duffin, ex Governor of HMP Strangeways! 👮♀️
Whether it's flying out of the UK with a briefcase full of class A drugs, talking to the BBC’s John Humphries in her nightie, displaying a naked hunk's willy on her office wall, or having MYRA HINDLEY as her tea-lady, Chris Duffin’s life as a prison governor was never dull. As the first female governor into HMP Strangeways and the notorious Dartmoor Prison, Governor Chris Duffin was a ground-breaker. She'll recount some of the many stories and incidents from her twenty-year career both as a lowly 'screw' and as a prison governor.

SSWI Tuesday 08th December 2020
For our December meeting, we'll be hosting a members-only (virtual) Christmas-themed 'get together' - we can sip at our mulled wine or mulled cider, made using the spice packs all Shoreditch Sisters members will have posted to them (you can choose whether to make yours alcoholic or not!), we'll have a fun quiz and also chance to share our favourite festive 'makes' with each other - whether that's a cocktail recipe, bake or something else. Don't worry, this is only for those people that really want to share - everyone else can just soak up the knowledge!
Most importantly, after many weeks of lockdown, this is a great chance to connect together virtually and celebrate!

Massage and Wellbeing
November's main meeting will be focused on massage and wellbeing! We’ll learn how to self massage and help ourselves relaaaax 🖐 Enjoy a relaxing neck, shoulder, face and head massage and embrace the wellbeing inside you. 💆🏼♀️ 💆🏾♀️
All you need is :
- a small bowl with 2 tablespoons of oil (olive, vegetable, coconut, baby – whatever you have to hand),
- a small towel,
- a warm & comfortable chair to sit in,
The important stuff: If you have high or low blood pressure then avoid massaging too deeply, just stay light. If you’ve had cancer in the past 2 years, you’ll be fine if you don’t go to heavily on the pressure.
If you’re experiencing any of the following then massage is not suitable for you at this time: COVID19, any virus, any illness, fever, shock, spinal injury, major/minor surgery in the past 6 weeks, and being under the influence of recreational drugs or alcohol – so no drinkypoos before or during dinner.
