CHARITY

Our chosen charity for 2018/19:
HOUSING FOR WOMEN

To support HOUSING FOR WOMEN we run a raffle at meetings to raise funds! The raffle is run on gift donations from SSWI members and local businesses.

At Housing for Women, we champion female empowerment by providing and promoting affordable homes for women and gender-specific support services.
Since 1934, we have been working to build a more equal society for women, a world where everyone has a safe roof over their head regardless of circumstance, where violence against women is no longer tolerated.
We believe that when women have control over their tenancies and their homes, it gives them greater control over their lives and confidence to move forward.
Due to the gender pay gap and numerous other factors, women are still, on average, disadvantaged in the London housing market. We believe that housing is a women’s issue and that by providing quality, affordable homes for women we can help to create a truly more equal society.

Campaigns

Picture
Shoreditch Sisters WI is known for campaigning on important issues. Things we have spoken out against are; Female Genital Mutilation (FGM); Gender Inequality (including pay) and female detention – focussing on supporting the women held at Yarls Wood Female Detention Centre.

We were part of the Women of the World Festival at The South Bank Centre in March 2016, where we displayed and worked on the Solidarity quilt we made with other WIs and Women For Refugee Women. The quilt is now in the Chapel at the Detention Centre for the ladies to inspire and remind them we are thinking about them.

The Vulva Quilt and Vulva bunting we made was used in the BAFTA nominated documentary The Cruel Cut.
In the past, we have given our support to No More Page 3 and the Ethical Porn Partnership.

Every year we support and campaign on different issues and in 2017/18 we are raising the issue of Period Poverty in conjunction with Bloody Good Period who came to speak to our members at a meeting.
